Video : 203 MB, 27986 Kbps, 15.0 fps, 320*240 (4:3), DIB = Microsoft DIB, Not checked
This is what I have for video in AVICodec, a utility which checks the codecs used in AVI files made by Philippe Duby: http://avicodec.duby.info
It’s a great application but here’s my trouble. It looks like this avi should not play but it does and well. Am I reading “Not checked” correctly.
I think this avi has not been compressed and I just wanted to see the codec if any that was used. It is 1:04 mins long and 219MB which doesn’t seem right.
I think avicodec will mark a file as bad if it’s of incorrect length. The (nice?) thing about uncompressed avi’s is, they’re the only kind Windows Media Player will play if they’re of incorrect size(!). I’d feed the file into gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) and see if it says 'corrupt avi header' (nothing to be alarmed about - it’s just a standard message, even when it’s just a file of incorrect length.)
If you feel your uncompressed avi takes too much room on your hard disk, you can always recompress it with another codec.
I don’t mind about the size. I’d just like to fix it if possible.
Let me give you another example. Here is a video that is 1,233,763 KB size. In Windows Media Player the file has 30min running length. This is obviously incorrect. The application I mentioned earlier says this about it:
File : 1.18 GB (300 M
, duration: 0:30:33, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 55 %
Video : 251 MB, 1150 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 352*288 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported
Audio : 48 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported
As you can see WMP and this application both see the file as having only 300MB of useful information. So what to do?
I opened the file in VLC Player and it shows the running length as 1:59:21 which is correct almost 2 hours. So VLC sees it right but not WMP.
Is there anything that can be done about this? This is not an isolated incident.
GSpot says:
n.a for Video and Audio. It does Render successfully. There is nothing that looks like an error at all anywhere in the output. I was able to save a .bin of 50KB of the header but have no idea what that is useful for. Thanks.
about the mpeg1 (?) file
Can you check the extension of the file? I think your file could be a cd (or dvd) image. VLC has the ability to read VCD’s and SVCD’s still contained in certain cd/dvd image file formats. That could explain why some of the other programs aren’t analyzing the file correctly. It’s just a hypothesis.
About the avi file
>> It is 1:04 mins long and 219MB which doesn’t seem right.
It IS correct, if the avi is uncompressed. Uncompressed avi’s are HUGE.
The file extension is mpg. It is 1 233 763KB as seen in Windows Explorer. WMP 6.1 sees it as running for 30.34 mins. It is a DVD Rip. The Playing time is not right. VLC sees it as playing for 1:59:21 almost two hours which is right. Also WMP really cannot play it anyway. It hangs after about 4 mins in. VLC will play it all the way. This is not an isolated incident. I have a number of these which exhibit the same behavior. AVI Codec saying all is well when it’s not.
