Slow,jerky video playback

Hi,I formatted my hard drive last week,and have downloaded,the usual Directx,dix and xvid codecs,i think i got something about mpeg4 too,but all playback is poor quality,i had no problems before and I’m sure my settings are okay,but I think I might be missing something I should have downloaded.Sound is fine BTW.Can anyone help?
