Interesting but disappointing. I found 3 AVI files with the I420 code also while searching for an old clip, and have no idea what created them, and when I try to play them, I get the missing codec message.

I was hoping there wuld be a response to your question.

Try the i.263 codec from intel. This is the link to their site. I think it’s bundled in there
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/download.asp?url=/2846/eng/codinstl.exe&ProductID=

Thanks for response.....something in that package seems to have worked on the longer of the files.

OK. I did more testing with these. It seems files with the I420 fourcc can be handled with either Microsoft’s H.263 codec or Intel’s i.263 codec.
Intel’s i.263 codec can be found here
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/download.asp?url=/2846/eng/codinstl.exe&ProductID=
Microsoft’s H.263 codec doesn’t appear to come distributed alone. However you can get it from different bundles. The two I found were NetMeeting and NetShow Tools (a program to make asf videos)
Here’s where you’d get Netmeeting
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/download/default.asp
Netshow can be obtained here (Microsoft doesn’t have it on their site anymore)
http://ftp.ncnu.edu.tw/Windows/MsDownload/netshow/3.0/sp3/sdk/x86/
right click the file named nstools.exe and choose “save target as”
I’m pretty confident that if you install then uninstall NetShow tools, the codec will remain on your system without you having to keep the program (NetShow).

I found the I420 codec came with my xirlink IBM pc camera, if you install the software for that camera you should get the codec working
