when i tried opening an mkv video i had using media player classic, this error occured:

I don’t think there’s any standalone codec you can download for H.264 ATM. Most come bundled in codec packs or all-in-one players like Videolan.
I personally recommend ffdshow-tryout: http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net
During installation just uncheck everything except H.264 in the video section. The file should play fine in Media Player Classic after that.
If you’re willing to try new things, try Videolan. It’s non-invasive and won’t hijack file associations unless you tell it to. It uninstalls very cleanly also. http://www.videolan.org/vlc
