My Windows movie maker won't import avi or divx files

My computer won’t import avi or divx files for some reason, When i try to import avi files i get this msg.
C:\Documents and Settings\Jess Morris\Desktop\Nicole.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from
And when i try to import Divx files i get this one
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Jess Morris\Desktop\Nicole.divx is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.
PLease help
