how to shrink loadza music/vid files to cd/dvd

I want to copy a home made music cd and some dvds, but when I select the files and try to burn them, windows says NO! I’ve tried with Nero too, but perhaps I’m not doing it correctly: still no joy. There seems to be too much data to fit on any standard disk.
How is it done?
