How to Manage Codecs?

I’ve never been able to get Matroska or OGM files to playback on my Win98SE machine.

Further, when I install some new codec pack, it totally screws up my 6.4 mplayer2 and my 6.4 mplayerc apps. So I reinstall them attempting to get things back to normal.

I want to stop this blind management of codecs and learn where they are kept, how to identify which ones are duplicates, which ones are used by which media players, and of course, which ones to get rid off.

6.4 windows media player does a fine job on MPEGs. You can open 9 windows and watch 9 videos at the same time. However, windows mp classic can’t do this. Maybe 3 windows max and they don’t even play at a resonable frame rate.

I want to know which codec is responsible for this and how to fix this problem.

6.4 wmp does multiple AVIs, however Classic will only do ONE at a time. You open the 2nd AVI and you get nothing. If you close the 1st AVI file, still nothing. You have to close both and start over.

I want to know which codec is responsible for this and how to fix this problem.

That’s a “me too”!!! A tool to manage Codecs or clean the registry of erroneous entries. Regcleaner is not working in this case... :-(

G-Spot is going in this direction, I hope it is developed further. long time no Update here though... reply
