How do I convert .mkv files to AVI or DVD format?

Hiya.

I am tryng to convert a .mkv file to DVD format using WinAVI Video Converter 8.0, so that I can burn the movie onto a disc. However, when I select the .mkv file I get an error message saying:

“Can’t decode this file! Maybe the file is broken or the relative decoder is not installed!"

I woud be most grateful if you can assist me in solving this problem.
