Help with Virtualdub

I’ve used virualdub many, many times. but now it doesn’t seem to work anymore. i keep getting an error

Virtualdub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. *

Can anyone tell me what this means and what I have to do to fix this?

Have you tried installing the latest version of the xvid codec?
