Got the SP54 Codec, Now What?

Hello,
I got a problem playing an .avi video. It says I need an SP54 video codec. I have researched and figured out I need a file called sp5x_32.dll to play this file. Now I got the file in my windows/system folder. However, the stupid file still cannot associate with the codec file it’s supposed to use, and I’m still not able to play the video. It is as if I had done nothing. How do I associate the sp5x_32.dll file to the avi file I’m trying to play?

Anonymous, all the explanations before didn’t explain what to do after we download the video codecs. That’s what I was trying to figure out.

Fortunately, I have figured it out. Here’s how to do it for those who’s having the problem. By the way, I have Win XP.

Go to Device Manager. Under Sound, video, and game controllers, there is a line called Video Codecs. If you click the Properties, you can see all the video codecs installed in your computer. The problem was I did not see my desired video codecs in there (sp5x_32.dll in my case). Make a note of a couple other video codecs already installed in there.

Go to the Registry, by going to Start-Run-type in “regedit”, and enter. Search for the other video codecs files that you have noted in the registry. I found them under My Computer\HKEY_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32. Add a string by right clicking on the window, New-String value, and type in VIDC.SP54. Then right click on the new string line you just created. Add binary value. Enter sp5x_32.dll. Done. You should be able to play your .avi videos now.

It’s wonderful that you found how to manually associate fourcc with the codec files by manipulating the registry (btw I’m the one who posted the procedure in earlier threads - I think my first post on that topic was in thread 2545). My point was that by trying jester’s link
