Awesome, guys. Codecs 5.0 worked for me too, great stuff.

I was able to download the codecs but when I try and open a movie in windows media player. I get an error ``Windows Media Player Has Stopped Workin`` I am running windows vista. Any idea what could be wrong!

Worked great, but now its 5.0 instead of 3.0, but still works like a charm

theman @ #40 is correct about the FMP4 nuisance but his advice only helps ppl who know what he is talking about. We earthlings haven’t a clue what a FourCC is.
If you see an error Re: FMP4 blah blah, when opening an avi file (One version of Sicko.avi is so plagued),
To fix FOURCC problem with unplayable avi files that have FourCC set to FMP4, do this:
Step 1: get this small file from Doom9.org [Approx. 0.25MB]
http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/AviC.zip
Step 2:Extract, then fire up the stand-alone program avic.exe. It will open in a very small program window.
Step 3: Klik the little folder icon in the program window & find/select Sicko.avi (or whateveitsnameis.avi)
Step 4: type FMP4 in the top space. [FourCC Description Code]
Step 5: type DIVX in the other space. [ FourCC Used Codec]
Step 6: Klik the Apply Button.

The program will tell you if it succeeded.
If it did, Klik Quit & you’re Done.
If not, you have a different/additional problem.

I try to make my instructions idiot proof but, they always outsmart me.

Hi. Downloaded the Codec pack and tried to play an AVI, but the movie doesn’t move. Tapping the Play button a few times reveals that Error 'C00D11D4' is occuring in WinMediaPlayer. What’s a-going on?!

When I install the codec 5.0, Windows Media player doesnt open, After in uninstall the codec 5.0, Media player opens fine. I dont get video, but have audio any ideas.

you need just the ffdshow codec - its open source. you can get it here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

id suggest avoiding the codec packs because they are probably loaded with things you dont need (like adware and viruses)

Thanks heaps guys. I haven’t been able to play some files (especially avis) in media player. I tried a lot of different codecs but after installing 'the codecs 5' they work perfectly.

I had problem in opening avi files in media player. I have a vista. Actually I have three avi files. One which I could open without any problem. 2nd one I could open after installing codecs 5.0 thanks to bubba. But rest I can’t. Actually I am the linux user, just few month back I started using window in my laptop. This file I can not open wven in Mplayer in linux. I saw the posting of darkflux it was a reply to the posting of C_H_R_I_S, who said to covert the files to Divx or to Xvid. I don’t khow how to do that. Can somebody help me in that?
