I’m fairly new to the world of video codecs and encoding your own video, but here’s my take on the issue: when you encode a video into the .AVI (MPEG-4) format, you have a variety of codecs (short for “compressor/decompressor," used for encoding (compressing, creating) and decoding (decompressing or viewing)) to choose from to use in compressing the video, depending on what codecs are installed on your computer.

Narrow it down to the DivX codec, and you have options to choose from within DivX: the old codecs (version 3 or 4, I’m not sure) are tagged DivX Fast-Motion (divxc32f.dll) (used I think to appropriate more bits to high-action scenes) and DivX Low-Motion (divxc32.dll — > notice no 'f') (more bits in low-motion and still scenes).

Now currently there is the DivX v5.1 codec. When I use VirtualDub, I have 2 options for this codec; they’re both labled “DivX 5.1.1 Codec”, but the fourCC codes are listed differently: “divx” and “divf," but that’s about as far as VDub differentiates them. So my guess is that the divf one is the fast-motion version of DivX 5.1, whereas I think most people usually use the low-motion codec when encoding (since most movies don’t have enough constant high-motion scenes to justify starving the more prevalent low-motion scenes of bits), and thus the reason that you only have this problem with some few videos.

Anyway, I assume you should be able to solve this by going to www.divx.com and downloading the latest divx codec for free (hopefully the divf version is included in the free version so you can play the divf videos). Better yet, visit www.k-litecodecpack.com to download a codec pack that includes enough installable codecs to pretty much rid you of the problem of not being able to view your videos. I was referred to this pack a long time ago and haven’t ever had the problem since. It also includes a great tool called GSpot that will tell you all sorts of information about your video, including the video’s bitrate, framerate, audio track information, and what codec was used to create it and whether you have codecs installed that can enable you to see the video.

I hope this makes sense to y’all. Was that too much? I never know.
