I’ve been searching for this but all that seems to come up on google is info about converting an swf to an mp4... I need to convert an .avi file with an alpha channel to an .mp4, keeping the alpha channel, I am wondering if anyone knows of any good software program for this. Thanks

Many video converter software can do this.

You can google for one or you can just use iSkysoft Video Converter

Regular

Only two video codecs were intended for the mp4 container: MPEG-4 ASP (part 2 - there’s tons of implementation like DivX, Xvid, mp4v from Apple, 3ivx, etc.) and H.264 (also called MPEG-4 part 10 - the most popular implementation being x264).

Now from the few posts I’ve read
http://list.xvid.org/pipermail/xvid-devel/2005-May/005034.html
http://list.xvid.org/pipermail/xvid-devel/2003-July/003230.html
http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/x264-devel/2008-September/004906.html
part 2 and part 10 both support alpha transparency, but I haven’t been able to find an implementation that does (most seem to convert 32-bit videos down to 24-bit prior to subsampling)
I’ll admit the posts I found are old (2003, 2005 and 2008) so perhaps there are new developments, but I’m not sure, since alpha isn’t used much these days.
A good place to ask would be http://forum.doom9.org
Also, ask around commercial offerings to see if they implement it.

If you can’t find any, you’re probably better off using different containers and codecs. (AVI, MOV, and MKV seem like containers with codecs that support alpha. see http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-115973.html for mov; i think indeo 4 and 5 (old) support alpha in AVI, and so do many lossless codecs).
