I am trying to make a movie of my brothers wedding, I recorded some of it on my digital camera and transfered it to my computer, but everytime I try to move the movie over to movie maker it says cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. Can anyone tell me where to get the codec I need and the name of it that way I install the right one. Thanks a bunch.. reply

If it is a .mov file, that file type is not compatible with WMM. You will have to get a converter to change it to a file type that is compatible with WMM. reply

Hi, maybe you should install mp3,mp2,pcm audio codecs. Hope your problem will be solved soon.
I use xvid and mp3 codecs, the video is ok to play. reply

These are the steps I had to take to get the problem fixed.

1. Downloaded “Any Video Converter” for free.
2. Converted the video to “Customized AVI Video” under profiles (in the top right corner it lets you choose the format to convert to)
3. After conversion, I clicked on the file in the converter and it gave me all of the info on the right hand pane, including the type of codec used.
4. I ran a search for the codec I needed and found it right away (I needed an xavi coded for Windows Movie Maker)
5. Installed the coded.
6. Imported the video to WMM.

Hope this works for you. I am by no means a computer guru but I hope it helps. reply
