i’m having the same problem on teh computer i just got, where the .avi files are only playing audio. however i’ve found that if you take them to a xp or lower operating system they work, which allows you to convert the files (a long boing process) which can then be used on the vista computers,if there is an easier way to get around this like a player (in english) that works with them can someone post the link to it?

Installing the Divx Codec solved my problem. I’m running Vista Home Edition.

SOLUTION: I was also unable to play avi files on windows media player on vista operating system. This worked for me.

I downloaded and installed the DivX media player
www.divx.com

Once installed I guess some codec cross referenced to windows media player or something. Now I can play .avi files on my laptop running vista on windows media player. And of course I can play them on the DivX player as well.
