I downloaded the first episode of Lost from season two. The sound is fine, but no video will play. Windows Media Player says there is an error downloading the codec.
Any ideas?

I have the exact opposite problem with an AVI... video but no sound. I hope someone posts an answer to your question because it might help me too.
Hi guys seems like you found each other! For video try to download from Microsoft the codec pack for WMP9 and for audio be sure you have AC3 filter install also any codec pack you like.My advice is go here download some real players like VLC and BSplayer and tools like GSpot and Avicodec. With these tools you can find out the type of file you deal with and the codecs video and audio you may need.Good Luck and here is the link:http://www.free-codecs.com/
Ok I have downloaded a movie and when I tried to play it in windows media player an error came up telling me I needed to download a codec which I did. Now the movie is playing but I have no audio or video.... however the bar moves showing the vidoe is playing. It is an avi file. I’m not a very technical person, I tried following the advice above but i’m so lost and have gotten no where. Could someone please explain if I can fix this problem and if so how?
Why don’t you start with the: I download something and here is a key what? If you know the type of your file we don’t or if you don’t know you can use Avicodec to open that file and the tool is a analayser and is going to tell you something about your file and more than that gives you links to download audio and video codecs that you may need .Also try to use a different player not WMP and see if is any luck. When you start downloading something make a choice a small file won’t take too long and is going to play on my computer. For this I need codecs and players. And one tip : look and try to understand the title of your file and I give you an example:Lord.Of.Illusions.1995.INTERNAL.DVDRip.XviD-TDF As you can see is a dvdrip so the uploader has the dvd and because is such a nice guy he made a Xvid file from that dvd and the size of it is about 700 Mb compared with original DVD around 8 Gb.TDF is the name of the nice guy so we have a Xvid file to play.WMP never works from the start but VLC and BSplayer work very well and are free.If the file has all the codecs plays nice and smooth and here you need the Avicodec to find out the type of your file and the codecs missing.Any codec pack has a lot of stuff so install all from above and try.
