Mr. Hunt

I find it amazing from this and other Forums that people ask the same questions over and over which are clear for all to read and execute.

An example here is a confusion as to the 'check all boxes' - What this means is very simple:

You download the K-Lite Codec Pack, for example from: http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_basic.htm

Once you have done this, run the .exe file to install. Upon which, you will see options. And notice that not all of the 'check boxes' are clicked. So you click (check mark) the boxes.

Next up open Windows Movie maker. Once done, on the file menue look for 'Tools' you click that, and then go to 'Options' - it is at the bottom of the Tools menu. Once opened that look for the tab called 'Compatability' and click that.

Now you will see either several, or few 'codec filters' find the 'ffdshow' one and click the check box next to it. Restat Windows Movie Maker and import your clip that would not play before. It should now play and be 'editiable'

All that was a breeze to do for me, I really am at a loss why so many were able to do the hard part and look for the codec and install but not the easy part 'looking for the check boxes to check'

Still..Solution - problem solved - happy days. reply

OI ALL U LOT...MICROSOFT HAS SOME INTERESTING HISTORY...
Microsoft buys all its competition, so when the competition makes freeware/shareware that Microsoft can’t buy, Microsoft doesn’t support it.
Don’t bother trying to get .avi running in WMM, because .avi is freeware/shareware so WMM pulls the finger to it.

You have to convert .avi to another format. reply

I did what Bongos said, but when I went into the Tools>Options>Compatability, there was only ONE box, and it was already checked, it was called “AVI Decompressor”, I’ve clicked and unclicked it many times with no change, any suggestions? reply

I’m an amateur when it comes to codecs so I was really REALLY apprehensive when downloading any of the things other posters mentioned. The one thing I was worried about was getting a virus. However, I was desperate so I download the K-Lite pack that someone posted. I did everything the poster said and it worked!!! I can now play AVI files in Windows Movie Maker! reply

fiuuuu!! what a day!

After doing what I wrote in my last reply, I then opened Windows Movie Maker clicked on TOOLS > OPTIONS>COMPATIBILITY> CHECK ALL BOXES INCLUDING FDDSHOW VIDEO DECODER.

Now both my Windows media player & movie maker work. Now more “adquiring codecs” warnings :-)

Hope I helped,

Bongos

Here’s what worked for me. First, download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_download.htm Next, go to Programs/K-Lite Codec Pack/Configuration/ffdshow video decoder. Highlight DirectShow Control and check the box “Use ffdshow only in:" and check the box below it. Next, highlight “Tray, dialog & paths”. Select Modern and check Extended Info. Hit Apply & OK.

Next, open WMM 2.2 and select Tools/Options/Compatibility. Uncheck ALL the other video apps listed EXCEPT those starting with Microsoft, ffdshow Audio Decoder and ffdshow Video Decoder. Hit OK.

Now, try importing an .AVI file. It should work. If it does highlight the .AVI file you just imported and look down in the right side of your system tray and you should see the ffdshow icon. Hover your cursor over it and it’ll show you the input codec and output codec being used.

What I suspect was going on before was there was some conflict between WMM 2.2 and one of the other video apps which was causing WWM 2.2 to crash every time I tried to import an .AVI file. You could do a test and go back to the Compatibility tab and selectively check each video app one at a time, try importing an .AVI file, and see if WMM 2.2 crashes or not. That should tell you which video app WMM 2.2 is having a conflict with. reply
