I have this problem where I try to import a .avi file but this comes up:

xxx.avi could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box.

I can’t find what it’s asking from me! reply

So, I’ve done what apparently has worked for many people here- downloaded codec packs, etc. However, when I go to Tools>Options>etc in Windows Movie Maker there IS NO FDD Show Video Decoder box to check. The only one available is AVI Decompressor.

I can import Avi files. They have sound, but no video and I’m ready to pull my hair out because nothing I have tried works :/ reply

FDDSHOW is part of the codec pack from the site that Bongie provided. If there’s no installation then it won’t be there to check off. The GSPOT site just specifies the codec(s) required, whereas an entire pack covers many dimensions in video/audio broadcasts. This may give you some unwanted settings, but it ultimately gets the job done. reply

And again, I will say I HAVE downloaded that codec pack. I even downloaded and installed ffdshow by ITSELF because I thought maybe it wasn’t installing from the codec pack for some reason. STILL it does NOT appear when I go to Tools>Options>etc in Windows Movie Maker and so my problem continues :/ lol reply

If you are still having trouble like I am importing .AVI videos and getting a popup error like “unexpected error” or you’re missing an option or etc and you have already checked all the boxes in TOOLS > OPTIONS > COMPATIBLY?

Never fear, Dre’s here :D

Just download these 3 codecs files

http://www.free-codecs.com/AV_Splitter_download.htm
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm

THAT’s IT! If you need more help, just message me on facebook.com/naptowndre

Make sure you check all codes when installing these. Then after you install, restart Windows movie maker and import video. reply

HI, i had this exact same problem. I did as someone else suggested and downloaded G-Spot from this website:
http://www.weethet.nl/english/video_which_codecs_gspot.php
G-Spot told me which codec i needed to downloand based on the video i was trying to import to movie make. I then googled it and downloaded the codec from:

You have the option to download Div X converter or just the coded.
I downloaded both and it now works perfectly. Try downloading the same codec i did first and if that doesnt work download G-Spot and it will tell you what codec you need and then just google it.

Hope this helps reply
