1. Go to
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm
and download the K-Lite Codec Pack FULL.

2. Run and Install the K-Lite Codec Pack. Make sure you do not un-check anything.

3. Open up Windows Movie Maker, go to Tools > Options... > Compatibility.

4. Check “ffdshow Video Decoder."

5. Press OK.

6. Now you can import video .avi files! reply

well i tried what was suggested and in movie makes i only have a option for " AVI decompressor " and it still cant do .avis right.

well this thread has been going since 2008. if windows movie maker has been broken for years and its not getting support , its just dead. i give up. just gonna use AVS instead. anything is better than more broken windows trash.

Every1 who’s having problems importing avi to wmm go to pg.6 and do exactly what ravingnutter says!!! i have to admit i was skeptical installing an unknown publisher to my pc, but im glad i took the risk... 2 hours of my life was wasted trying to sherlock holmes this shit, but im glad i ran into this board. otherwise i’d be stuck with my thumb up my ass...

I convert a MOV file into an avi file and then try to import it into Windows Movie Maker and it says 'cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.'

I then went into tools, options and made sure that codecs download automatically and it still doesn’t import.
