I used an old ATI all-in-wonder card to make AVI videos in Windows 98, but cannot view them in Windows XP. “GSpot CODEC Information Appliance” says I need Codec 4CC: VCR2 (ATI Video Codec 2) to view these files. I have searched the ATI website to no avail. Can anyone acquire this particular codec for me? I have also searched with Google, but am a novice video buff and am unsure how to acquire and install the required codec. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Try playing it using VideoLAN (www.videolan.org). This media player uses its own filters.

Also there appears to be a Patch. I’m not really sure if the official codec can be downloaded anymore. Here’s what it says about it at this site:

VCR2 uses the YUV12 plannar encoding structure. Codec used by some ATI TV-PC products up to and including the current Radon series. The hack is to the right, since it would appear the ATI offical playback codec has been removed (or moved) from their site.

Thanks Bjarne and FrightfoO, your information helps. One point, however: The ATIVCRX.html file you mentioned is for machines WITHOUT an ATI card. I forgot to mention I have installed an ATI all-in-wonder 9000, but the video software will not play my old videos, even though it says the VCR2 codec is installed.
Since I posted here, I did more research and found an article that says the VCR2 codec will only work on Pentium processors with MMX. I have a Celeron 600 processor, so I am going to test the article’s theory on a PIII machine at work. I will post the results here...

Hello James,

I’m experiencing exactly the same issue, as my old P3 crashed and had an ATI all in wonder. I have now a P4E : did you experienced any issue installing the VCR2 codecpackage ? or should I avoid doing it ?!

Thanks for your help,
Greg

With this codec on a P-III computer with a new ATI All-in-Wonder 9000, I was able to play my old videos.

Here is a link for the VCR2 codec: http://codeccorner.com/ae.html

I hope this help!
