something odd has happened to my system and i am way past any restore point. i can play any audio/video file but when i use an encoder like tmpgenc or virtualdub etc, it behaves as if it gets no input audio, which is very odd since i can use media player/VLC etc to playback. i’ve even tried to extract audio separately (using goldwave) and that does not work (says it cannot determine format of file). i’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling various things...can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

Try installing AC3 filter. Here is a link:http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ If no luck try Sherlock and find out if you have a broken codec:http://www.free-codecs.com/search.php
