Patriq Guest | Check out this link for Windows Media Player 5 that will actually open and play those videos that say “FourCC....CRAM codec needed”. If link isn’t working, I think you must have Windows XP installed. Go to RUN, type in mplay32.exe and it will open a bare bones media player (see above) and drag and drop the .avi file that you want to play. Not the best quality but it will suffice! Have fun!

anonymous Guest | That’s Microsoft Video 1. It usually comes bundled with the Windows operating system. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it bundled in any installation package you can download.
There’s the possibility it may not have been installed when you installed Windows.
Here’s something to try if you have Windows 98- it may work under Windows 95 and Me too:
Go to control panel, go to add/remove programs, click the windows setup tab, double click on multimedia, then make sure the video codecs box is checked. You may be asked for your Windows 98 CD.
I can’t think of a fix for Windows 2000 or XP (run sfc - the Windows File Checker - maybe?)

goodtime charlie Guest | Use Windows Media Player Classic 6.4.8.1,
It will play almost anything. I tryed it with an avi with CRAM and played fine

anonymous Guest | Media Player Classic still wouldn’t play the file if the codec is missing. Proof: search for msvidc32.dll and delete it. (If you use Windows 2000 or XP you may get a windows file protection error - don’t restore it immediately, you can restore it from the recycle bin later). Now play the avi with fourcc CRAM with media player classic. It won’t play.
One case where media player classic will play an avi which windows media player won’t play would be an avi of incorrect size. Such a problem would be codec-independent however.

VV Guest | Actually, it works under WinXP + SP1 without installing something extra or deleting abnything.
mplay32.exe just plays the clips. Thanks for solution, Patriq
