WinAvi Converter Problem

Hi, I kinda need some help. When I converted my .rm files to DVD with the WinAVI program, the episodes tend to slow and freeeze a lot. Is there a way to fix this problem? uh, maybe I’m using the wrong settings... help please?
If anyone has a better program that produces high quality files please help out! ^_^
