Sound about 2 seconds faster than video

Twice now I’ve downloaded .avi files and when I play them, the sound is about 2 seconds (or 2 lines) ahead of the video. Bad enough that I can’t watch it because things are talked about before they happen. Is this normal? Can I fix it? If so, how? (the only other thing I have downloaded was a simpsons episode, and it seemed okay, but it’s harder to tell with the animation).
