cello, while I don’t blame you for not reading all 640 posts, there are among these pages very valid reasons for the issues you’re facing. And to be fair, this thread was started over 2.5 YEARS AGO! Things have improved dramatically in recent times, let me assure you.

For one thing, Premiere Pro doesn’t work well with ANY MPEG video file - .MODs are not unique in this context!

MPEG video is rarely supported by professional editing applications for very good reasons - hence why Premiere Elements works out of the box, but Premiere Pro doesn’t (because professional editors prefer to work with less compressed formats.)

The fact is that JVC never intended for the .MOD files to be supported by “the industry standard for working professionals” because it’s a CONSUMER CAMERA!

I am getting excellent results out of Premiere Elements without effort. The only extra step is to direct it to interpret the footage when importing 16:9 files - from then on everything works exactly as you would expect.

niftydog - I accept what you say which you put very well. I would still say however, that for a consumer camera it is not straightforward for consumers (as per this thread). I have no experience with video, so as a consumer I mistakenly thought that I could read the files from the camera’s hard drive (like my digi SLR) and then work with them.

Anyway, perseverance prevailed and I have a slow solution which solves the problem (for me at least).

Install the Cyber Director app, import the file straight from the camera (no need to rename extension) and it retains the 16:9 ratio. I then export as an AVI (which of course balloons the file size!) which I then open in Premiere Pro.

It’s annoying I have to go through this middleware - but at least it works!

I have a new JVC hard disk drive camcorder and had some of the problems listed here. I use NeroVision Express 3 and at first I had no audio and the video was jumpy.

After reading the thread I learned that .mod was a Dolby Digital (AC-3) 2.0 format. So, I purchased the DVD-video Plug-in from Nero for $24.99. That gave me audio!

When I burned the DVD, the audio was out of sync with the video and the video was jumpy. I learned from a thread to turn of the Smart Encoding under 'Video Options' when you click on 'More' on the Burn Page.

That didn’t really work. So, I looked further and while in 'Video Options' I clicked on the DVD-Video tab and changed Encoding Mode to High Quality and changed Audio Format to Dolby Digital (ac-3) 2.0

It worked! My DVD came out great. I don’t know if it was just one of the changes or all of them that fixed it, I’m just happy I can burn DVDs now.

I’m writing this to let others know how I got Nero to work with .mod exts. Hope it helps someone.

cello, I accept that some people have much more trouble than I’ve had, but it’s often the case for early adopters. It’s only now, over 2 years on, that HDD cameras seem to be starting to take off.

For me it was a simple matter of getting away from the awful CyberLink software package that came with the camera, but that done I’ve never looked back.

For those that insist on using Premiere Pro you either have to transcode the files, or buy the Mainconcepts MPEG plugin. This is not a fault of JVC’s making - it is simply, as I understand it, due to the lack of MPEG support in Premiere Pro.

Raregolddragon, you should not have to do ANYTHING to the files for use in Premiere Elements 4 - they should just work exactly as they come off the camera. They work just fine for me in version 3! Perhaps there’s something wrong with your installation.

For God’s sake people... you could be trying a little harder to find your answers before posting!

.MOD files are MPEG2 video with AC3 audio. You need to make sure whatever program you use supports both MPEG2 video and AC3 audio. It really is as simple as that. Sometimes, installing an AC3 codec such as AC3filter will fix the audio problems.

If you just want to view files, Media Player Classic is the best choice. No frills, small download, free, and it works better for .MOD files than any other program I’ve tried.

If you want to edit .MOD files, I can attest to the suitability of Premiere Elements versions 3 and 4. PREMIERE PRO WILL NOT WORK without additional software.

My good deed for the day.
Step by step directions for auto transfer upon connection.

1. Start notepad.

2. Copy the following text and paste in notepad
[autorun]
open=video.bat

3.Save file as autorun.inf make sure save type is set to all files in the save file dialog box.

4.Put these two files autorun.inf and video.bat into the root of the cameras drive. In the example Lars provided his camera is set as drive e: so the files would be placed in e:\

Tip 1. If your cameras drive is not e:\ make sure to change all e:\ references to the letter of your cameras drive.
For example if your cameras drive is g:\ you would simply replace all e:\ with g:\.

Tip 2. Make sure that windows option for action upon disk insertion is to autoplay. This will open the autorun.inf file which will inturn open the video.bat file.
This is windows default action for cds.

Hope this helps

I bought the MG555U. The .mod file extension can be changed to either an .mpg or m2v file just by right clicking the file and clicking on RENAME. Just rename that file extension. Once it is changed, you can edit the movie file in just about any editing software.

I bought this camcorder at Circuit City and the “expert” didn’t even know this.

Good all ya’ll

In your example:

echo off
echo copies video files to c:\video\%date%
MD C:\VIDEO\%date%
copy e:\sd_video\prg001\*.mod c:\VIDEO\%date%
ren c:\video\%date%\*.mod *.mpg
EXIT

Let us skip a step here..

Better way is this...

echo off
echo copies video files to c:\video\%date%
MD C:\VIDEO\%date%
copy e:\sd_video\prg001\*.mod c:\VIDEO\%date%\*.mpg
EXIT

This was solved long ago when people used DOS for an operating system...

Technically it is possible to type “copy filea.txt filea.doc” and you will get an identical file, in the same folder, with only a changed extension.

Sort of like when you right mouse button drag and drop a file in the same folder it was found in..
You get a menu asking what to do: Copy, move, make shortcut, or cancel.

If you have added functionality to your right click menus you may have more options...

Hope this helps someone. DOS still has many uses.. and can still be used under Vista for those who have made the painful switch.. (FreeDOS)

Happy Editting

Here’s a good reference on how to convert MOD files: http://convert-mod-files.allofyourquestionsanswered.com/

They also have links to a lot of good 3rd party softwares there.

I’m afraid of unloading my files from my JVC GZ-HD3U to my computer, because I’m affraid I would loose quality. How can I be sure not to loose the HD-quality and store this somewhere. I also have a friend that would be doing some of the editing of my newborn first daughter’s up to 1-year-old video clips, but without sending him the whole camera, how would I best do this via mail or internet, because I think internet is not exactly an option due to the extremely large files, but the mail option seems to require a lot of DVD’s that he would later have to sort out. Is there a better option? Someone? I’m running out of space on the 60 GB cam-corder. Thanks in advance.

If all you’re doing is copying files from one destination to another, there’s absolutely no chance of loosing image quality.

Short of buying a portable hard drive, the best option is probably still DVD’s. It would take around a dozen dual layer DVD’s to back up the entire 60GB hard drive.

I just wanted to say, I bought my SDR-H18 and tried using the software that came with it. It led me to 2 weeks of confusion and near insanity. When coming over this thread, i rembered my old JVC Eveiro which had the same problem with .MOD files. I had solved it with the supplied software (PowerProducer) and it had worked. When I got the software, it suddenly worked like a charm. I blame Panasonic and their shitty software and thank everyone in this discussion.

I tried renaming MOD to MPG or M2V. They can play on Windows Media Player. However when I put it into video editing software, the audio is gone. The Producer software that came with the JVC also caused audio lost when converting MOD to MPEG2. MPEG1 is OK.
