My advice would be NOT to convert them at all!

I suggest you all find an editing package that can deal with the files as they come off the camera. They are after all nothing more mysterious than MPEG2 video with AC3 audio which is the same format as many DVD’s you buy off the shelf!

Once again I stress that most problems are caused by the lack of appropriate codecs. If you’re having audio issues, get an AC3 codec. If you can’t edit the video, then perhaps your editing software is not up to editing MPEG2. It really is that simple.

Virtually all recent software packages I investigated support .MOD files and are very reasonably priced. When you compare the cost of the software against the effective cost of hours of searching for obscure conversion solutions it’s an absolute no brainer.

Plus, you’ll get new features, better functionality and greater performance.

Nobody is going to just email you a magical solution, Minna.

What version number of premiere? Pro or Elements? What is the problem you’re having?

Premiere Elements 3 worked perfectly for me straight out of the box.

The major problem with Premiere Pro (any version) is that it is simply not designed to edit MPEG encoded files. There is a plugin which allows MPEG editing, but it is expensive and I have no direct experience with it.

AVI is NOT a video ENCODING format - it is what’s known as a “CONTAINER format." AVI files may still contain video encoded using the MPEG codec and would still cause problems in Premiere. So, merely converting the files to .AVI doesn’t address the real problem caused by the MPEG encoding.

I’m not saying that AVI files won’t work in Premiere Pro, but I know that MPEG encoded files, whether they are .MPG, .MOD or .AVI can cause problems for Premiere Pro. The confusion is caused by the fact that the AVI format often “contains” DV encoded files - so the files you get from a DV camcorder are often shown as .AVI files.

(Note that .MOD is also a container format, but it always contains MPEG program streams. The .MOD format is quite similar to the .VOB container format used for DVDs.)

The way I see it, you have two choices:

- Buy some new editing software that supports MPEG video (specifically .MOD files)

OR

- convert the files to a format that Premiere understands.

Premiere Elements 3 has worked well for me and is very reasonably priced. There should be numerous other alternatives that support the .MOD format.

Premiere Pro is primarily a “DV format” editor - this is the format that tape based camcorders use. If you can convert the files to the DV encoded format you may be able to get the files to work in Premiere Pro. (The DV format defines its own codec - search “DV” on Wikipedia for specifics.)

I have no direct experience using Cyberlink PowerDirector to convert file formats, but according to what I read in the documentation for version 6 it is NOT capable of exporting files in the DV format.

I am having a similar problem with the .MOD files, however, my problem is that I am unable to import the files from the JVC camera hard drive and convert them to a MPG or AVI format with Cyberlink Power Director. I have copied the files from the camera to the hard drive and I am still getting an error when attempting to import. I have contacted Cyberlink and JVC and they have both told me to uninstall and reinstall the program, tried it and that didn’t work.I have also attempted to use other programs such as Adobe Premier and Pinaccle Studio, both giving me the same error, Unable to read file format. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am a I.T. tech working at a school and I am trying to solve this issue for a teacher, it is very easy for me to change the file extension of the file, however, this teacher would liek to be abel to import his files without having to go through the entire process of changing the file extension.

Given you’ve had issues across so many applications I’d suspect that the files themselves are corrupt.

It would be worth you reading my previous post and taking note of the part about Premiere Pro and editing MPEGs.

Can you open the files with Windows Media Player? (use File ? Open...)

Have you read ANY of the posts here? Obviously not!

Go to http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t124055.html for lots of good information.

If all you want to do is watch the videos, the just download this program. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358

In my experience there is absolutely no need to change the file extension. Update Windows Media Player, download and install this codec (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=66022) then try to open it in Windows Media Player.

Simply rename the .MOD files to .MPG

I use Window Movie Maker (I’m no Director) to create my videos. Some people have complained that when recording in 16:9 their videos are squashed. In MM, Tools>Options>Advanced, change the Video Properties from 4:6 to 16:9, problem solved. I have not experienced any audio problems with this method.

Right this is easy

Change the file name to .avi with an extension changer and install the xp codec pack 2.3.4 this has the AC3 filter thatyou need to ensure is dealing with mpegs.

Now import your files into premier CS3 and you should be good to go. You also don’t get the problems with decoding that renaming the file to .mpg gives (also gives no sound)

Apart from the fact that JVC have chosen a movie format that is less than easy to convert into one that is useful for any fo the major video applications (as proven by this thread of some 640 entries), not matter which application I use (I’ve tried 12 now) the video I shoot in 16:9 stubbornly stays in 4:3. This renders my camera useless.

I am a professional graphic designer with 20+ years experience and this situation is the same as buying a still camera that cannot save in JPEG format.

JVC is taking the piss. There is no software that directly sorts out the .mod issue as well as the aspect ration one. I am using Premiere CS3 as well as After Effects CS3 and JVC think it’s a good idea that the industry standard for working professionals won’t work with their product. Hmm.

Video camera connects with PC, file opens in application, edits can be done, family pleased to get copies. That’s how it works JVC. I have just wasted money on a product that does not integrate, cannot be easily edited and the ratio incompatibility means that those that I video look squashed.

Great job JVC. Please don’t make anything else. if you can fuck up something this simple then God help you with something complicated.
