How to convert .MOD file into anything acceptable by Adobe Premier ?

The scenario you describe seems to suggest that iMovie DOES work with .MOD files, otherwise I fail to see how deleting the .MOI files could have possibly affected that guys iMovie project. I can’t comment about specific issues, but the iMovie website clearly states that it supports MPEG2 - and that is EXACTLY what a .MOD file is.

As for filling up the hard drive - the .MOI files are utterly minuscule compared to the video file they accompany, so you hardly gain anything by deleting them.

Now, wasting money... How much for a bog standard iMac these days? Only one arm and two thirds of a leg now is it? I like Macs, and I’d love to upgrade mine (G4), but the cost is simply unjustifiable given the last PC I bought cost me $150!

Just right click on .MOD extension and click “rename” Then, rename the extension to .mpg
This works for me.

Guys, thank you for all your blogs regarding mod convertions. I just bought a JVC HD Camcorder for $285 and I find it very interesting. I loaded all the softwares that came with it but reading your blogs, it gave me more perspective on how to enjoy this camcorder.Danhelp you are great and very knowledgable but XENOSTEEL, You are AWESOME!!! I tried renaming the MOD file to MPG and it works well. I will keep this new toy for I was planning to return it to SEARS if it is too complicated.....THANKS GUYS...IN any rate, SHould I invest in a FILTER KIT? SInce I bought the cheapest JVC GZ-MZ21US, it does not come with the integrated lense cap but it comes with the traditional snap on! Thank you again and happy shooting to you all....

I use AVID Free DV which downloaded the from http://download.chip.eu/en/Avid-Free-DV-1.6.1_101934.html

I just change the file extension to .mpg because .mod files are mpg-2 files.

Did you find out the answer to your shuddering video problem? I am having the same problems, ie when the camera or any subject moves the video shudders on the DVD but nothing indicates there is a problem in the program. Can you help please?

Try to use the JVC’s CyberLink PowerDirector to export the MODs into AVI or MPEG or MOV or anything! It works, I tried it!

i dunno about you guys, but i run windows xp and have windows media player 11 (WMP) installed, as well as the k lite codec pack and everything reads them fine, audio inclusive. i dunno if its the k lite pack cause its a WMP mpeg2 icon on the file

Hey guys. I had the same problem for the MOD files when I wanted to edit them in premiere. Took me a while to find out what would be good to use to convert the video to an mpeg-2 format seeing as an MOD file is mpeg-1, and I found this easy to use software, very user friendly, gives you tons of options for conversion.
It’s made by Cyberlink and it’s called PowerDirector.

I have had this JVC camera since last Christmas - I do not understand why MOD has to be so complicated - I am soooo confused. I renamed the MOD to AVI and MPG, etc. - It plays on real player but it will not import into Movie Maker. I also ran the file thru Prism Converter (Free Converter Software) - and was able to import into Movie Make, however it seemed that the quality was low. Any advice.

Whats the best video camera out there that saves the file as AVI. I am ready to buy camera #5!

ERomano, you are wrong, .MOD files are most definitely MPEG2. Furthermore, most users would already be aware of Cyberlink since it comes bundled with the camera, however, if you bothered to read the thread you would quickly discover that it is unable to do batch conversions and is fairly unstable, so it is of limited use to power users.

Zabeat, again, .MOD files are MPEG2, so change the extension to .mpg, ensure you have an AC3 audio codec installed and the files should open in windows media player.

Movie Maker is a joke - consider a decent video editor like Premiere Elements. (Avoid Cyberlink!)

File converters have many, many options - you have to either set the program to retain the resolution and bit rate of the original file, or trial and error until you get the quality you want.

Free software is usually awful compared to commercial products - but if you buy the right software (Premiere Elements) you won’t need to do ANY converting.

No hard drive camera I’m aware of saves anything but MPEG2 files - the bit rate is too high to save full quality DV files to a hard drive in real time. AVI is not a file format, it’s a container format - within many AVI files lurks an MPEG2 video file! Chances are that the conversion to the AVI container format converts the .MOD files AC3 audio to something more commonly supported and does very little to alter the MPEG2 content. I suggest you investigate this thread a little more paying particular attention to discussion about AC3 audio codecs.

I have had great success with Premiere Elements and I’m reliably informed that the new version of iMovie supports .MOD files. Those would have to be the best two choices IMO.

I am trying to import the files to windows movie maker. When i try to import it (in mpg or avi formats) it says MOV010.avi (or mpg) could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from. What does this mean and how can i fix it?
