Your camera has several quality settings - something like (from memory) ultra fine, fine, standard and webcam(?) - you must have inadvertently set the quality setting differently for one of the files. Or you’ve switched to wide screen mode, or a combination of the above.

To get the smallest file size, switch to the lowest quality setting. You’ll probably still need to do some resizing and recoding of the files to get them small enough to post to YouTube or similar.

Image content has some effect on file size - for instance, filming a completely stationary scene will result in smaller files compared to filming an action scene.

Are you looking at files on the camera or files you have transferred to your PC?

-Ok i tried what u said at first about changing it to economy which i thought i had it on but i didnt. This seemed to work out a little and save more space. It sux that the only way is to change it back to economy because this changes my screen size also which i hate because i like the full screen view.

-Do you know any way that i can keep it on Fine settings and still be able to keep it under 100MB?? I thought this camera would be very good for media and stuff like this but it seems to make things more complicated. I like this camera it just gets complicated at times when u need to convert stuff to ur PC. Do you own one??

The bigger the screen size, the more pixels, the bigger the file size. You simply CANNOT avoid that relationship no matter how hard you try. If you want full screen, the files MUST be large - it’s just how it is.

The only way to keep it on the fine setting and create a file under 100Mb is to make a very, very short video - like maybe 5 seconds or less.

Firstly, you MUST compromise on the screen size - there’s no avoiding that. Secondly, you will have to learn how to properly use third party video format converters so you can reduce the file sizes. By reducing the bit rate and other parameters you will be able to make small files, but it will ALWAYS be at the expense of image and sound quality.

These cameras ARE good for “media stuff” but modern video encoding technology is very complicated and constantly changing. So much so that it has become difficult for the average user to know what to do and how to do it - but you cannot blame JVC for this situation (although, they could do more on the software side of things to help us consumers!) If you had a conventional DV camera you’d be finding it just as difficult (if not more so) to make small video files.

LOL yea i think I’ll just have to stick with low resolution videos then i guess. I dont think its possible in any way to get my views out in 5 seconds lol. I have found that the Ultrafine and Econo settings dont have much difference other than you can view fullscreen on Ultra, so i think i can pretty much live with that. Again thanx most likely I’ll be back again lol.

Well, that IS the difference - it is literally the difference in the screen size.

Computer monitors (and the screen on your camera) display a fixed number of pixels per square inch. So, an image or video with fewer pixels must therefore display smaller than one with more pixels.

I’m having the same problem, but with Windows Movie Maker. My question is what operating system are they using. I’m using windows vista and sent the file to a friend to see if they could figure out how to convert it, they were using a different operating system and when they received the file it showed up as MPEG-2 or something on their computer.

If u are using a JVC camcorder the files are gonna automatically be saved as Mpeg-2 files which are just MOD files. What is your same problem that u are having??

an easier way to rename extensions if you have a lot of them is to go to run in the start menu type cmd and bring up the command console then find the directory where your files are located. use the command “rename *.mod *.mpg” without the quotes. This will rename all .mod files in that folder to .mpg

I just rename the file from *.MOD to *.avi and I can load it into Premiere CS3 with no conversion required at all. Sounds works etc.

Enjoy!

Islandprl, it’s not the operating system that’s to blame here. Once again, the files are MPEG-2 with AC3 audio. You MUST ensure you have appropriate codecs installed in order to view and hear these files.

MPEG-2 codecs are very common and should not need to be installed.

AC3 codecs are not nearly as common and are often NOT a part of default installations. Look for the links in this thread - download and install an AC3 audio codec.

when i change the file extension to .mpeg and then import it into ulead video studio, i get the video but no sound. Is there a way to get the sound without paying for extra software? PS. I got the .MOD files on a DVD from someone else.

kaym, ignore the .moi files they are NOT video.

annoyed sim, your answer IS in this thread, but I don’t have a specific recollection of the solution so you’ll just have to suck it up like the rest of us and read the whole thread! It’s likely got something to do with the lack of an AC3 audio codec.

I simply copied the files to a new folder, just in case it didn’t work so I would not lose my files. I opened the “Command Prompt” in accessories and typed the drive where the files were. I typed “CD New” I had named the folder “New”. I typed rename *.mod *.mpg” and instantly the files were changed and played fine on Windows media player.

Sup Guys,
its been interesting reading all the problems that people have been having with their JVC camcorders, the funny thing is that i thought that the only problem was using it with mac....

i have a mac book pro, and cant import direct into Imovie, which defeats the whole purpose of bying a camera.... since macs are based on music and video production,
i didnt understand why they would even make cameras that only worked on PC....?

Oh and to answer the MOI....? should i delete? question...
the MOI files are timecodes and store the dates and times in which you created the files and must be kept, i dont know if you need them on a PC, but i know that its probably best to keep it just in case....

the worst that can happen is that you use up your hardrive... hay but who doesent...?
I have been reading alot of Forums relating JVC camcorders and getting them to work....lol, and i read about this one guy that deleted all his MOI files and when he went back and wanted to do something, Imovie wouldnt let him because all the dates were gone or something.....anyways the point is that it didnt make life any easier...

and last but not least....
stop wasting your money and buy a mac....lol

God Bless,
jOrDaN
