Virtus89 Guest | Note - if you are running XP, IE’s security settings (under tools) are automatically set to medium. This prevents XP from installing codecs and other ActiveX controls when the publisher is not verified by Microsucks.
Permanent fix:
Virus scan the file, open IE and connect to internet, go to tools, security settings, reset security to low, open the file.
WMP “SHOULD” download the codec automatically, then ask you if you want to install it.
Remember to reset your IE security back to what you want when you’re done.

sandviper Guest | dont care for codecs for WMP, just download the TMPGEnc Decoder. It makes MPG2 videos and doesn´t care for codecs.
You can find it at:
http://pegasys-inc.com
it works for 30 days.

The ~other~ Lee Guest | Allright, folks. I’m using WMP10 and trying to play some m3u files which are linked by extension asf (I guess it opens asf first, then the m3u? *shrug*). I’ve read all the excellent advice here, and tried these solutions but to no avail. My question is, the codecpatch file reports that the codec was installed, but WMP10 still won’t recognize the asf file. However!!!,... mplayer2.exe will play these files w/no problem. Perhaps my XP SP2 update is glitched somewhere? Hrrrmmm. And the most Curious thing is that this just randomly happened. I had already installed SP2 and opened these files before. Likewise, I’ve made no other codec alterations since then or installed any multimedia player progs, either. I think my monitor wants a shotgun blast. And lemme aim over in M$'s general direction as well, for good measure.

rslu Guest | You can download codec from this URL
http://codecs.microsoft.com/codecs/i386/voxmsdec.CAB
Open Internet Explorer...
Choose Tools > Internet Options > Security and change it to LOW. then go into media player (doesn’t matter which version) and play the file. The codec will download again, but this time it will actually ask you if you want to install it. Choose YES. Simple.
Once you’re done change your Internet Explorer security setings back to where they were before.

sadperson Guest | I do everything the same as you guys, low down my security, type that mplayer2 thingy, I downloaded the codec but then some stupid pop up went up and said there’s an error. The it shows 2 secons of the 18 minutes the video is supposed to be and then just stops.

spyda Guest | I was having the same problem, I used johns suggested work around of using MP2 however it did play but was missing audio... my fix came from entering in to media player option, security tab, then altering my zone settings to prompt me for unsigned activeX downloads
