I have a samsung SC-D353 and when I try to run the movies it says that I need the SMP4 codec. Where can I get it? I tried downloading the drivers off their site, but it didn’t do anything.

Nice toy but the battery has a very short life. The only software besides the driver is photoexpress. Here is the link: http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/support/b2c_downloadcenter_detail.jsp?eUser=&mobile=N&oid=74351&cntType=SW&cntId=249248&lang=ST Why don’t you e-mail your problem to the support tech and start from there.

The SMP4 codec was on the disk called DV Media Pro 1.0. It came with the camera when I bought it.

I just bought this Samsung SC-D353 Mini DV camcorder. I talked to the tech people (very friendly and knowledgeable, haha). There is no software available to convert this SMP4 to a more reasonable file type. Therefore, if you buy this software, you will not be sharing video with friends without the hassle of them having to download the codec. I don’t understand this logic? Does it make their product more attractive in some way? Can someone explain it to me.

Vendors sometimes have to pay royalties if they use someone else’s codec in their hardware products. To bypass that they just write their own codecs from scratch. The result is a plethora of unheard-of codecs and the problem you mention above.

When you said SMP4 I originally thought it was a fourcc (maybe it is... someone needs to feed their files into avicodec and confirm this)
Sleuthing on the Samsung site yielded this.
http://www.samsung.com/download/FileView.aspx?cttfileid=626510&type=Camcorder&typecode=7&subtype=Mini-DV&subtypecode=701&model=SCD353&filetype=DR&language=
After install, it seems the handled fourcc is SEDG (which is Samsung MPEG-4).

I’ve contacted Samsung engineering a couple of times trying to find out if there is some kind of patch available for either smp4 codec or ulead videostudio 7 because of trouble editing memory stick videos.. at first I thought it might be a problem w/ 98SE but the same err msgs arise in XP too.. no advice yet from Samsung.. but I have found workarounds..

1. ms movie maker (1) w/ sp1 will render a complete movie (wmv or even dv .avi) from clips that have been edited only from back end.. that is clips may be shortened if 1st frame and every next frame is kept in sequence up until trim at the end. (I’ve rec’vd err msgs w/ mm 2 on sp2 but it’s a notebook w/ pent-m w/ nvidia card)

2. roxio 7 will do pretty much the same as mm 1 — even add transitions like cross-fade between trimmed clips. but it only outputs to disc or image

3. if you take one whole clip in mm (unedited) and render it in entirety to dv quality (25Mbps), delete that clip from the filmstip, add another and do the same thing, etc, etc .. then import all the 'movies' into ulead videostudio 7.0 you can assemble them on a strip, edit from the front and rear, add transitions and render as whatever ulead offers — .wmv .avi etc (this take A LOT of time)

4. Microsoft also offers (or did) a command-line utility for WMP 9.0 that will batch convert raw clips. I have rec’vd err msgs trying to use it w/ raw smp4 clips but I still have hope..

Alright,
Go to the Samsung website and search for “SCD353” from the downloads center. Then select download software (not drivers) and you can download “SCD353 software (ver.1.0)" which will have the codec embedded in it. Hope this helps as it has caused me a lot of time to figure this out so I can see my family videos from Christmas.

Hi there guys , basicly i have found the codec to play SMP4 codec files. Although i can find no way to convert these files to any reasonable editable file. Making film editing impossible. Anyone know a way i can do this?

Big thanks!

Hey all,

I just got the Samsung SCD353 camcorder for budget reasons, and I’m trying to get the software onto the computer so I can import my videos into Movie Maker, but I don’t have the original software disc, and the downloads from the Samsung site are really confusing and they don’t automatically install. Any help?

Thanks a ton!

All the best,
Jesse

I have the SCD353, and I recently took vacation videos on the tapes, how do I get those onto my computer so that I can burn them onto DVDs? I can watch them on my computer but that seems to be it.
Thanks

Hey guys, whenever I’m about to install this codec, I get a message saying this: “Continuing your installations of this software may impare or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediatly or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for sofware that has passed Windows Logo testing." I installed this before, after a while, windows movie maker stopped working correctly, and my HDD crashed a few weeks later, should I go through with this? Please help!

I wish I had found this blog earlier. This camera really ticks me off. I can edit video just fine as long as it was recorded on the tape. Just like everyone else, if you try to use the memory stick, it crashes everything. I have bought so much stinking video software its not even funny, thinking it was a software problem.
