randomjames Guest | I am running Windows 95 with Media Player 7. Recently, the media player automatically updated itself (I am not sure exactly what it did.) Since then I have not been able to play WMV files properly - first the player tries to connect to a codec server, then seems to fail and try to play it anyway, the sound is fine but there is no picture.
I have used AVIcodec on WMV files and it says they use the codec Windows Media Video V8 and that this is unsupported by my computer. I have tried downloading Windows Media updates but they require Windows version greater than 95.
These are exactly the same files as I used to be able to play, so presumably Media Player has decided to change which codec it thinks they need and in doing so has outpaced my machine.
Is there a way of reverting back to whichever previous codec it was using? If I uninstalled Windows Media Player and then reinstalled it would that work or would it keep the same configuration?
Please help.

randomjames Guest | mplayer2 won’t run. An error message comes up saying the file is linked to missing export MSDXM.OCX:RunDllW.
I tried installing all of the codec updates from the page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx but none of them seem to make any difference. AVIcodec still does not list Windows Media Video V8 as an installed codec, despite the fact that I “sucessfully” installed it in one of the packages.
Curiously, AVIcodec does list Windows Media Video V9 as an installed codec, but won’t play wmv files without V8.
Is it possible to convert files without having the correct codec to play them? If so what is the best software for converting WMV files to mpg etc?

anonymous8888 Guest | For some reason i can play it, but i am unable to rewind or forward, when it plays, it can only play through the whole thing without letting me skip to a certain part of the video, say i wanted to skip the beginning and go straight to the middle.
