No video on avi files

I have downloaded certain avi files, all video related and none of them will play the video. When I play them in either Creative media player or Windows media player all that plays is the sound, not the video!

Why is this and is there any way I can fix it?

Any help would be appriciated, thanks!

you may not have the codecs installed to run the video,have you tried checking the video with g spot from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
