Take a look at;

esttu Guest | i have a question then... when i take video with my digital video camera, and capture it on my computer via firewire, what format should i use? I always burn to DVD-RW, and I use Ulead VideoStudio 2.0. Sometimes the picture quality sucks! Is that a format issue? I think I capture as mpeg, and burn as DVD. Would different formats be better, and would I get better quality if I burned VCDs?

Newfie_player Guest | @ esttu:
If you use the wrong conversion process to burn you movies onto DVDs' or regular CD’s then the audio/video might be out of sync.
.mpg should be encoded with VCD and .mpeg should be encoded with SVCD.
If you got a .avi and you want to burn to DVD then use SVCD.
If you want to shrink an .avi to better fit on DVD then use TMPEnc and the output will be .mpg so you must use VCD.
As for the best output from you DV Cam, someone else will have to post on that topic. I got a Hi8. :-( ,lol.
Hope this helps. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this.

esttu Guest | thanks for the tips
I usually have a little pixelation and a lot of horizontal lines in my video. i was just wondering if that is due to the format I use. Ultimately, I believe the “rendered” video is in .mpg format, and then I burn with Nero. I didn’t realize that the burn speed affected the quality that much... i will try slower burn speeds, but i think there’s more to it.

The general consensus has been tha burning VCD’s at high speeds causes pixelation. If you burn at the lowest speed possible for your burner, the pixelation is at its minimum; depending on the material that was encoded, of course. Basically, if your encode is as clean as possible, your final burn will reflect this.
Give it a try. | |
