why cant i play my downloaded movies on my media player

i have downloaded movies but cant seem to get them to play im lost and have no idea how to resolve this. i tried downloading the dvd-r version and the x-vid version i have no idea what the difference is im just new to downloading. All my albums play ok please can some one tell me how to work the movies
