Do American DVD's still play on UK DVD players?

I have a serious problem, I just purchased a dvd via the internet and have only realised that it’s region 1 and is from America, will it work on my British DVD player?
Help much appreciated.

Usually no, but there are ways to circumvent this with region killers etc.
