i have a movie in mkv file format and im needing a codec for the audio.
i play it in WMP 9series, and when it opens it shows searching for codec, connecting to server, then error downloading codec.
so i figure there must be a codec out there for it, i dont know what one though.

ive used Gspot to try to find what it needs but it wouldnt work for the .mkv file

ive downloaded the Divx ;-) codec, AC3 codec, MPEG layer 3, and Ogg Vorbis.
none worked

thanks for help

Use VideoInspector for diagnosing mkv files. gspot doesn’t support them yet.

There is a tool in the matroska full pack from http://packs.matroska.org , its called matroskadiag.exe . It will analyze your MKV file, find out if you have the right filters installed or not, and point you to a possible filter source if its not installed already.

Alternatively try VLC from http://videoland.org, its has all decoders (codecs) built into the player (not DirectShow based). But unfortunately VLC cant play MKVs with Realvideo (RV9/10) and ON2 VP6/7 video streams.
