Avi on the aiptek DV camera won’t be read by magix movie edit pro 2004, this is really anoying as I have to find a free avi to mpeg converter, but movie edit pro says that it can read avi files, not aiptek ones it seems.

Can anyone help?

It would help if you specified which aiptek model you’re using. Any information about the media file produced would help too (for that feed it into avicodec - http://avicodec.duby.info - and paste us what it says)
