Once On2's proprietary codec, VP3 is now open source. It was maintained for some time by xiph.org, but then moved to theora.org.
If you have QuickTime 5 or 6 and you’re connected to the internet the codec will download automatically when attempting to play a file encoded in VP3. If not, the codec can be downloaded and installed manually at the link above.
VP3 is cross-platform (can be in AVI or QuickTime container). Provided the codec is properly installed, both QuickTime Player and Windows Media Player can play VP3 in either container.
Note: The VP4 codec can decode VP3 contents.
Keywords: VP3, VP30, VP31
