Sound plays, Video doesn't

For a while, now, any time I try and run a video file, the sound will play but the video doesn’t show anything. This problem includes .avi, .wmv, Dvds, etc. You name it, it doesn’t play.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of my media playing type things (winamp, divx, etc), and installing every codec I could possibly find, but nothing works. The only thing I can think to do is just wipe out my HD and start from scratch and see if that will work, but I don’t have enough space on my HD to partition it so I don’t lose all of the files that I would like to keep, nor do I have the space to back everything up, with this being a laptop and all.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would me more than appreciated, and I will say now that I’m not the most computer savvy person in the world, so laymans terms would be appreciated even more.
