If you properly installed the codec from a reliable source like http://www.koepi.org or http://nic.dnsalias.com/xvid.html (and you had administrator privileges during the installation), then the problem isn’t with the codec.
Chances are the file is truncated or otherwise corrupt. An easy way to check is to feed the file into gspot (headbands.com/gspot). It will tell you corrupted avi header. If that’s the case, try opening the file with avipreview (avipreview.com) or media player classic (gabest.org). If gspot doesn’t recognize the file as being an avi, then it’s either corrupt beyond recovery or a fake.
