Below is what happened to me, it’s a bit longwinded but I’m posting so someone else can google up a solution if they get stuck.
I was having the exact same problem, and was having a hell of a time figuring out what was going on. I recently tired of WoW and bought warcraft 3 to check out RTS, which I had never played. All the cinematics were screwed up, displaying a purple box, but playing the sound perfectly. I upgraded my Nvidia drivers, and I could then see the video, but the colors were washed out. I thought it was something wrong with the embedded movie app, so I copied the movies from the cd, renamed them from mpq to mp3, and watched them with windows media player. Same problem. I then checked out other videos I had, same problem.

Ok, this is what you must do
Go to the Nvidia options panel
Go to Color Correction
Set the 'Apply color changes to:' on 'All' instead of 'Desktop'
