burning widescreen avi files to dvd while retaining aspect ratio

It told me I need a real media codec, but all I can find is stuff directly related to the real player, which I don’t think I need. If anyone knows of a way to burn avi files with different aspect ratios than full screen without cutting off the edges of the video that would be great!!
