I’ve dabbled a bit in the dark arts of ripping, so here’s my guide to dvds, game cd’s etc.

You wanna rip a DVD for playback on your DVD Player?

RIPPING FROM DVD to HARD DISK
Use DVD Shrink to rip it to your computer (http://www.dvdshrink.org/)
How?
Once DVD Shrink is installed, select “Open Disc”
Browse to the DVD in your DVD Player and select it.
Shrink will spend +- 1 minute collating the dvd information.
Once done, you will be able to select the audio tracks you want included / excluded. (I normally exclude all foreign languages).
Once you’re satisfied with your selections, click on “Backup” from the top menu.
You will be presented with option tabs. Select “ISO”.
The ISO image is then burned to your hard disk.

COPYING ISO FROM HARD DISK TO DVD (http://www.dvddecrypter.com/index.php?act=download)
Use DVD Decrypter to copy your ISO file to DVD. (ensure you have selected, from the Decrypter nav bar: Mode=>Iso=>Write)
Select the yelloW folder under “source” to select your iso file.
Select your dvd player under “destination” to burn it.

BACKING UP GAMES (FROM ORIGINAL CDS)
You’ll be using two programs for this option:
1. A-RAY (to scan for the type of protection on the game cd/s)
2. Alcohol 120% to burn the image files.

Pop your game cd into the tray, use A-RAY to scan for protection type.
Once you’ve established protection type, open Alcohol 120%
Select the source in “CD/DVD Device”
Select read speed (go for “middle-of-the-road” option here)
Select session (normally first one)
Select Datatype (security/encryption) as reported by A-Ray
Click next
Select destination directory, name of image and image format (keep it mds).
Select start.

An exact copy is made of your game cd.

Now, I don’t have the correct burner, so I have been unable to create exact copies of my cd, but what I do is the following:
I copy all the mds files to a dvd (most games these days have more than 2 cd’s).
I delete all the mds files except the “play cd” mds, which I leave on the hard drive.
Using Alcohol 120’s virtual drive, I mount the image file (file=>open=>myfile.mds, right click on the file now listed and select “mount”wink.
If it’s a play cd, it should load as per normal.
Note:
When installing a game making use of more than 1 cd, you will need to go to Alcohol and mount the next image file, switch back to your game installation and repeat the process if there are more cds, each time mounting the next image file (mds file).

I hope this simple guide proves itself useful to some folks out there. It’s helped me loads so I’m just sharing the knowledge.

Rgds,
