jait Guest | Okay, I did a little bit more research on my end, and I was lucky enough to be able to get access again. I don’t know the specific details of your situation, so your mileage may vary.
For me, I replaced my hard-drive because of a SMART drive warning of an imminent failure. I still had the original drive with the original installation of XP on it. My avi’s were on a secondary drive separate from the boot drive.
It turned out that I’d had both the directory *and* the individual avi files encrypted using NTFS security.
The problem is that XP uses an encryption method that depends on certain keys being in place in the registry. These keys are generated upon account creation and system installation. So, your reinstall, even if you use the same name/password combo, may not grant you access to these encrypted files.
I went to
http://www.beginningtoseethelight.org/efsrecovery/index.php and came to the conclusion that rebooting with the old drive would allow me to unencrypt the avis. So, I spent some time swapping drives.
It worked for me. I hope it helps give you another idea.
What I’ve learned from this? If you’re using NTFS drive security encryption, make a backup of the keys (look at the windows XP “cipher' command and, at the very least, export the registry entries with the appropriate info.

topcat139 Guest | This is a windows specific problem
Windows explorer has an avi preview function to it. That’s what gives you the thumbnails of the files. THAT is the issue. Explorer locks the files, and will not unlock them. You can’t move them, erase or view. There is a fix forthis, the preview function needs to be turned off.
I don’t remember exactly the script, but you can google for avi files locked, and you find the fix, it modifies the registry to kill the dumb preview thing, then no more issues. The reason is twofold. One, SP2 creates this issue, and second, explorer gets stuck when you load those codec packs. They are very messy, there is alot of contention , ie; windows can’t figure out which codec/filter to use to decode the file. The codec packs are not very good at making certain that the codecs are installed correctly, the priorities are equal on the filters they install, so windows basically has to hunt thru all of the possible filters until it finds one that works. It may also find one that doesn’t work well and then gets constipated. :}
A simple solution to the codec problem is to load just FFdshow, and kill the other extra stuff. FFdshow will decode most video and audio you will find out there3, and it also works as an encoder too. So if you like you can use VDub with it and create your own files in whatever format you like.
luck,
topcat

lee420 Guest | ffdshow has some of the more poplar codecs but doesnt have a lot of the codecs u need. Your best bet is to delete all your codecs and then install vlc player and that has many more codecs included than ffdshow and then if it works then install the missing codecs which can be found in the “Ace codec pack"

ferret-Nostra Guest | yep i had that exact problem b4, and the last posting in this should fix the problem, the other thing to check is file size, winxp fell over on me and when i re-installed, a whole heap of "good files" became recognised as lost frags, so dont think you lost them, got to tools>folder options>view and tick "show hidden files and folders" and untick "hide protected operating system files"
N.B: MAKE SURE NOT TO DELETE ANY FILES YOU SUSPECT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE OPERATION OF THE COMPUTER AS ALL FILES ARE NOW VISIBLE

Daniel Guest | I am working at it, but some time ago I got to open the file. First I had to delete it (I think it does not go to the trash bin) and then I recovered it with Recover My Files.
Not very nice, and probably not safe at all.
I’ll try to tell you if I ever solve it

Daniel Guest | OK, I give up; I do not know whether there is a real solution to this problem, and I am not in a hurry to download fixers.
I have used again the delete/recover tactic. If you can use Linux, I have a feeling it might solve our proble.
Just for the record, every time I have had this problem was after dragging the .avi files into a folder; sometimes I have also had trouble to delete files, but they disappear eventually.

KaHos Guest | By going to <Start> -> <Run> and typing:
“REGSVR32 /u SHMEDIA.DLL” (without the quotes)
will do the trick.
Happy deleting...

panicden Guest | Listen, I came to this forum a week ago and tried everything on the page nothing worked for me, then Iafter much fiddling (I am stubborn and would not give up on my locked file) I found a solution that worked for me and best of all it is SIMPLE, here it is:
Go to the folder where the file exists and while cursor is in the folder right click your mouse, then lcick on the sharing tab, then simply check the box “Share this folder on the network” that can be found in the “network sharing and security” section towards the bottom.
Now play your video, then MOVE your video, Enjoy!

I hope that would help U solve ur problem, or otherwise I’ll b a jackass.
This solution worked well for me only because VideoLan prompted me to repair my damaged avi file. Thanks it’s a great program.

Nvidia-Why Guest | Googled this page hoping it would solve my, so it sees, unique issue. I just installed Windows XP pro after formatting my Windows 2000 Pro. I have a Geforce 6600GT and Nvidia installed for HDTV output 720P. Everything worked fine on Windows 2000. Had Ace installed, and couldn’t be happier.
Now, I’ve formatted 4 times thinking and found the following. Without the Nvidia drivers installed, I can play my avi files. With them installed, serious lag and no play.
I installed the newest driver, newest DirectX, tried a variety of Codecs packages, no go. Won’t play ANY AVI files. At least now there’s no lag... just doesn’t play.
I’m going to walk off the 7th floor balcony in a minute due to the frustration this would-be simple process should be. Anyone have a magic solution up their sleeve?
