Hi Lee420,

I tried to do what you said. I rebooted in safe mode. I went to the file (properties), tab security and selected my name. I checked the box 'total control' and pushed the button 'apply', followed by 'ok'. I still have the same problem. By the way, I’m working with XP Pro, but where do I find .. simple sharing .. in the properties? I’ve looked after it, but didn’t find it.

Thought you left us,lol. Ok to disable “simple file sharing” do this: Click start then My Computer, on the tools menu click folder options, and then click the view tab. In the advanced Settings section, uncheck “Use simple file sharing” and your done. Now here is the correct way to take back ownership because that doesnt sound right. Look here at the microsoft support page:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech

Now this should fix you right up, good luck.

Lee420,

I did what you told me. Disabled simple file sharing and then got into the properties of the folder and file to take back ownership. The result is still the same: file does not play and I’m still not able to move or copy the file. The message I get is still the same: cannot access the file. Is there another way of helping me out???

The main reason “another fool” is that U have TAMPERED with the REGISTRY of window. That is why U can’t get access 2 ur AVI files. Read this.

... is an invalid discretionary access control list by returning error code 0x5.
This error code means “Access denied” when it enumerates a registry key. ...

See if this will work.

Go to Start | Run and type

CMD

And press enter.

Now, type the following, where folder1 is where they’re currently stored, and folder2 is where you want them:

Make sure its at the C prompt. If its set to My Documents and settings, type:

CD\

and press enter.

Then, it all depends where the folder1[ is actually store, but I’ll pretend its in My Documents, so do this, but change where it is if its different, type this:

CD\MY DOCUMENTS\FOLDER1

Then press enter

Make sure the files are in there by typing

DIR

and press enter.

Now, lets move them to another folder, so type the following. Again, Folder2 I’ll pretend is in c:\.

MOVE MOVIE.MPG C:\FOLDER2

and press enter

The prompt shouldn’t say anything exciting, so go back to Windows Explorer and see if the file has moved, and you can access it. If you can, do the rest for the others

Thanks eddie, as he is the one that wrote this!

You can try to subsitute the C: for E: and see if it will let you,but i have my doubts. Looked on microsofts help pages and cannot find anything to help you that we have not done. And from all the tests and failures, im starting to come to the reliazation that its gone for ever. You may have to format and cut your losses, i hate to even say that because that is never a good opition to have. But i will look somemore and ask around, never had this problem.

G’day, I’ve got a similar prob and I think your problem can be solved by doin this.
Start, My computer, Tools, Folder Options, View,
then look down to the bottom of the list and “untick” ( use simple file sharing ( recommended) ).
and apply that to your avi files. It should then allow you access to them. But it didnt solve my problem.. a different one Can’t load drivers.. access denied as admin.
Cheers and good luck in a crazy world of no anti logic electronics

First of all the 'locked' avi files thing is a MS problem, not yours. Try looking for the app, fileunlocker, or wholockme? These will unlock the files so you can work with them, though even these aren’t 100%. This is a windows error. You could try using a 'Live' Linux cd to boot your system, then move the files to a different lcation and reboot into windows. UBCD may work as well, but you will still be booting either into dos or a limited win machine so you may still have the file locked. Linux Live CD’s are the best to access Win machines that are acting up.
OH, file sharing has NOTHING to do with it. Turning indexing off will speed up your machine and prevent intermittant file locks.
In folder options, turn OFF avi preview as well, that WILL lock the files, and often make them inaccesable

luck!

check if you are owner of the files.
It’s under the advanced button of the security tab

Hi people.
I have a tricky problem as well which I am hoping to get some help with. I have downloaded an Xvid movie which works fine on my girlfriends computer. However, I cannot get it to work on mine. I have a brand new travelMate 8100, so XP is pretty clean. I tried downloading only the Xvid codec at http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/, didnt work. Then I downloaded the k-lite codecs at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm, still doesnt work. I have dowloaded gspot to see if I have the correct codecses. According to gspot I do, actually I have several compatible codecses. If I try to run the movie using WMP10 I get the followin message; “Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." If I try using media player classic I get; “cannot render the file”? I have tried ALOT of codeces after this. Nothing works so I dont think it is a codecs problem. Just in case, I have installed the newest bios, video, chipset and audio driver. I would really appreciate some YODA help on this issue as I am seriously STUCK!!! sad

Thanks

I had a similar problem yet I seemed to be able to figure a way out.

Follow these few steps and hopefully your file/s will work again (It did work with me):
1. Get to “My Computer”
2. Right-Click on your drive and choose properties
3. Go to the “Security” Tab

!!! Here is the crucial bit !!!

1. There should be a list box at the top with “Group or User Names” labelled above it.
The next set of step will differ so only follow the situation that suits you!

If the list box is EMPTY, this is what you do:
1. Click “Add..."
2. Advanced in the window that pop-up.
3. Click on “Find Now”
4. Choose the username that you are using from the bottom list box.
5. Click “Ok” and “Ok” again in both boxes.

If the list box is NOT EMPTY, this is what you do:
1. Choose one of the usernames by clicking on it
2. At the bottom list box make sure “Full Control” is ticked. This should tick all the boxes below it.
3. Follow step number 2 for all the usernames found in the top listbox under the “Group or User names:" Label.
4. Press Ok.

Try playing your file.

For any more inquiries on this subject or any other, please email me at propertyofchrist@hotmail.com putting the subject as “Forum Help” or something on that line. Thank you and hope this was helpful

If it says it can’t render the file then the problem must be with the codecs.

Go to www.google.com/ and search for “Video Codecs” and download the ones in Microsoft website. Best one’s.

I did what you said me to do. The problem still exists: no access and still cannot move or copy the files.

What error does it give you?
And are you sure that you are allowing the right user to access ALL things?

Security issue?

I’ve run into a similar problem. While investigating, I discovered that I’d had NTFS encryption on the folder holding the AVIs, keyed to my user name.

Only, I’d renamed the computer something different when I reinstalled the O/S. I’m not certain if this is what you’ve run into (so many possibilities), but it might be something else worthchecking out.
