another fool Guest | Hi,
I’m facing a problem with my avi files. I have XP PRO installed but had to reinstall it. My data was on the other disk, so I kept all data and only formatted C disk. Since I reinstalled XP, I cannot read any more the avi files; although they are still there (explorer indicates the M . I tried to read them with VLC and WMP9 but without success. I also installed ACE and tried to play them with MP Classic... with the same result: cannot open file. Does anyone have an idea how I could fix this?

labish Guest | Why you have to reinstall WinXP the restore system is working very well but anyway for the sound card WinXp give you a driver but for your video card you have to install it.Download DirectX and install it and then download your driver for your video card and install it.Only after this try to play something and start from there.

kaitlin Guest | Video Card? Is there something i can just download without purchasing stuff to make it work?

labish Guest | That was a good one! A video card is a board install in your computer or I hope you have one in order to play any video file but is not going to setup by itself so click right on my computer choose properties click on hardware/device manager and you are going to see a list.Click on the plus in front of Display Adapters and is going to show you the mistery card.Nvidia or Ati or whatever and go to manufacturer site and download the driver.

TopsyTurvy Guest | Video card a.k.a Graphic Accelerator has got nothing 2 do with any avi files what so ever. If U don’t have a video installed U won’t b able 2 surf the net. What U needs kaitlin is a reliable media player like vlc...n screwed wmp10. Link...
www.videolan.org/vlc/
I hope that would help U solve ur problem, or otherwise I’ll b a jackass.

another fool Guest | I downloaded DirectX and the driver for Nvidia. Then I rebooted the pc, .. with the same result: no access to the AVI file. It’s strange because the AVI files I downloaded after formatting and reinstalling XP, do work with videolan and MP9.. Any suggestions??

TopsyTurvy Guest | another fool..1st thing U gotta have 2 know is whether U have tranfer all the important n necessary files 2 the other harddrive (known s D)b 4 re-installing or 4mating ur C harddrive. If U did that, then there should b no problem at all since the other harddrive had nothing 2 do with it. So s 2 speak, all the files should b in D harddrive. In my point of view is that U just have 2 double click on D inorder 2 watch all ur avi files that U have save. See if U have it in D drive. If not..I’ll have 2 throw in my towel n say I give up or the moderators of moviecodec might b able 2 help n sort out ur problem.

Lee420 Guest | Ok what drive did you reformat? And how many hard-drives do you have and whats the letter.EX: like C: E: and or they internal or external drives. Is that the only thing that is giving you problems on the hard-drive or is all the info on the drive unreadable? What does the message say exactly when you click on the avi file?

another fool Guest | I have two disks (C and E). As I had a lot of problems with the OS, I formatted C and reinstalled the OS. I still can see all files I have on E and have no problems with word, etc. I only have problems with AVI files and then only with the ones I had before reinstalling the OS. The message I get when trying to access the AVI file is (using Media Player) that he cannot access the file; using VLC, VLC starts but nothing happens

Lee420 Guest | Ok use this avi previewer and tell me if this one will let you play it. If it gives you a message tell me exactly what it says. This very small program is kool because you can view .avi files that are corrupted and not fully downloaded. Get it here:
http://www.avipreview.com/download.htm
Try the newer one and the next newer one to be sure.

Lee420 Guest | Ok if it doesnt play and doesnt say nothing about cannot access them then start by removing all codecs such as divx, xvid, and theorica codecs and reboot to make changes final and then install ace bundle codecs. It’s big but it has all the codecs you need or could use. Just download and install:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm
And reboot after installion to make these changes finale and play, it should work.
If it still cannot be accessed, check to be sure your extra hard-drive is enabled in “device manager"

another fool Guest | I downloaded avipreview and it says when running: access denied; error code=0x5. When I go to the file properties, second tab (summary/advanced) I receive no information. Now you mention it, I think my troubles began with installing ACE (all options activated) because then my normal MP9 was replaced with the MP Classic. Since then I cannot access the older files anymore. I uninstalled then ACE, installed VLC.. still no result. Then I downloaded the code pack XP and DivX with the same result (not having access to the file)

Lee420 Guest | Let me talk to some of my friends and see what we can come up with. What a messed up problem to have, i dont know if its your codecs for the simple fact that it says “access denied”. So there is no extra info about your movies or what that were coded with so that means it is corrupted. If you think the ACE bundle screwed you then. See if you have a restore point that will bring you back, before you installed ACE. As a good tip to remember is a soon as you format and reinstall o/s i always create a restore point before i install anything else.
Oh but give this a try if above fails. Go here and download video fixers, i havent used them but my friend has and he said it fixed a few of his problems and they work very nicely i was told. www.download.com and just go to search and type in “avi fix"

pmohn Guest | Simple method to determine if the codec ( compressor/decompressor) that the specific .avi file needs is installed. Download Gspot, a utility to determine what codec is used by a video file. Start Gspot and open the video file. In the upper right side of the Gspot window, a four digit code will say what codec was used. If the codec isn’t asigned an ID code, then the next window down will show the codec name. Download and install the required codec, and the video should play properly in almos all installed video applications.

another fool Guest | I downloaded GSpot and tried to run it on the mentioned file(s). GSpot was not able to run and gave message: access denied

another fool Guest | Perhaps the problem has nothing to see with Codec’s. I tried to move and copy the files and was not able to. I can however rename the files. Any idea what the problem can be? I am administrator on the system, so it cannot be with access rights..

TopsyTurvy Guest | The 1 thing that U couldn’t get access 2 ur movies files is bcause its dead. Kaput n Finito. U had killed that poor thing with ur itchy hands. There is always this saying...Honesty is the best policy.

Lee420 Guest | Hehehehe, Had this problem before. Boot xp in to safe mode and browse to the folder you need and right-click and properties and security tab then advanced ownership tab and take back ownership.
If you get message that “file is in use” do this go to control panel>Adminstrative tools>Services and scroll down and and double click on the indexing, click stop button and try to move the files again.
But tell me how it works, as i am sure it will work just fine and your problem will dissappear. Oh with pro you must first disable “simple file sharing” before taking ownership.
