Can't play .mkv file in WMP10 after Matroska Full v1.1.1 install

I downloaded a .mkv movie file to watch. Read on here that I need to install the Matroska Pack v1.1.1 to watch it in WMP10. I installed the Matroska Pack Full v1.1.1 and left the defaults on the install. When I tried to play the file, WMP will open up and it will say “playing” at the bottom, but nothing happens. No video and no audio. The little marker (showing progress through the movie) doesn’t even move.

I opened the file in the MatroskaDiag utility and this is what I got.

I realize that it was encoded using RealPlayer 9/10 and as you can see, I have RealOne Player installed on my system. I have not installed the CoreVorbis audio codec yet, but I should still be able to get video then, right? I won’t install CoreVorbis until I at least get video because that really wouldn’t help the video portion.

Oh. I just looked at the info for the VLC player and it says that it doesn’t support playing .mkv files that use the RealPlayer 9/10 video codecs. So this player wouldn’t work anyway.

Well, I suspect that the Matroska Pack Full v1.1.1 just doesn’t work well (in my case, at all) with Windows Media Player 10, but I was able to play the .mkv file using Windows Media Player 6.4. In another post I found that this player still exists on your system even if you have Windows Media Player 10 (or others, I suspect). It is found in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe. This successfully played the .mkv file for me. Hope this helps others.

For a MKV containing Realvideo ( RV9/10 ), you will need Realplayer or RealAlternative installed in any case, for the necessary Realvideo decoding liraries which have to be present on your PC..... WMP 6.4 won’t help here, compared to WMP 10, wihtout these libs its powerless .....

Well, for whatever reason, using Windows Media Player 6.4 worked for me. Yes, I have RealOne Player installed. I did before I even installed the Matroska Full Pack. It still did not work in Windows Media Player 10, but only worked in Windows Media Player 6.4. Still only works in 6.4 to this day. Don’t know why, but I’m happy that it works their, at least.

If RealOne is installed, the necessary DLLs for Realvideo decoding are present on your machine, and all is fine. Strange that it doesnt work in WMP 10 though. Maybe Gabest had to update his Realsplitter filter, so that WMP 10 isn’t conflicting. However, he seems to be MIA since some time now ...

I don’t know if anyone still needs this but I had the same problem with WMP10 and I solved it by installing the Matroska Full v1.1.1 and then installing the Haali Media Splitter and I managed to get it to work. Hope it helps.

I have XP and I just right clicked an MKV file, chose properties, click 'change' changed the file association to mplayer2 in the windows media plaer folder in the program files directory.

I can watch 'big O' now...

I really wish that MKV files were never created. Whoever made these MKV files are making life difficult for people who wish to just enjoy some simple download video files. I downloaded everything that was recommended in this forum. That includes Windows Media Player 10, RealPlayer 10, Matroska Full V1.1.1. and Haali Media Splitter. NOTHING WORKS ! I am so fed up with MKV files. NEVER will I download another copy of MKV files anymore. They SUX......

MKV was not invented for easy file sharing. MKV is the successor of AVI, and is offering much more possibilities than it, that will of course lead to a higher risk of failure if all options are being used.

After all, its the decision of the person sharing the rip, to use whatever format he thinks is best suited for his release. Its unfair to blame us, the creators of MKV, that you cant play pirated movies from the web, especially when so many other people can do that successfully.

I expect your machine is b0rked, probably because you had too many codec packs installed before. There are many DShow filters out there that are poorly coded, and will interfere with other filters blocking playback of MKV and other files.

Even if this not our job, we even made a tool to help the users to identify where the probem is, and what installed filter is causing the conflict. Its called matroskadiag.exe and is coming with the matroska full pack.

Run the program on your MKV file and send the log file to matroska-users AT lists DOT matroska DOT org . I am pretty sure we will be able to identify where the problem is on your machine.

Hi Christian! Thanks for your enlightenment on why Matroska didn’t work on my machine. I did have another codec on the machine and after removal, I was able to read .mkv files. Much regrets on my quick blame on something that delays my quick fix of Japanese anime. I am not a pirated movie buff. Just one big, avid fan of Japanese anime. Just out of curiousity, what is different between .avi and .mkv files? Will I be able to play .mkv files on my multi-format dvd player like I was able to with those .avi files. If not, is there a way that I can convert them? Thanks for your patience.

AVI and MKV are extremely different in the way the video, audio and subtitles data are stored inside the file. The way we do it in MKV will allow for a couple of improvements compared to standard AVI (like Vdub creates them, NOT ODML AVIs) :

- Variable Bitrate audio (VBR) : most modern audio compression formats are using VBR for best possible compression, and AVI (in principal) can not support this important feature. There are tools that do that, but they use a kind of trick : the claim the audio track is a video track . MKV will support VBR audio in a proper way, without any hacks

- Soft-Subs : MKV will allow to store several subtitles tracks in the file, using your preferred text or picture based subtitles format, and even allow switching between them during playback. For AVI there is only one tool allowing that, avi-mux GUI, and only SRT and SSA are supported. (MKV: SRT, SSA, USF, VobSub).

- Variable Framerate video : MKV files will allow to store video with a variable framerate, which is extremly important for anime (allowing excellent compression ratios). AVI can not do this, by no means.

- Support for special codecs : MKV can contain many video and audio compression formats which can not be stored in AVI at all, like Vorbis, Wavpack Hybrid, etc.

So trying to answer your question :

Can MKV files be converted into AVI files easily ?

Short answer : if this IS possible, than there was no point in creating a MKV beforehand. MKV files can have features that AVI doesnt support, and thats their main advantage. If easy conversion from MKV to AVI is possible, no such feature was used, making the use of MKV in the case more or less pointless. Most MKVs today use either Realvideo (RV9/10), XviD VFR or AVC (h.264) video, and those can NOT be muxed into AVI without reencoding the complete movie.

However, there are MKVs floating through the net where at least the video and audio can be transmuxed into AVI, if you just decide to leave out the subtitles (like MKVs with XviD video, MP3 audio and SRT subs). If you dont need the subs, avi-mux GUI or VirtualdubMod will do this for you. avi-mux GUI can even mux SRT and SSA subs into AVI files, but the resulting files will NEVER show the subs on standalone Mediaplayers, if they will play at all.

I downloaded an anime in mkv format. I’ve got k-lite codec pack installed which includes the matroska codec. When playing in MPC i get the following:

Looks like you are having a problem with your soundcard drivers. Can you play other files, like AVI, MPG or WMV on your PC ?
