ok i have a problem with VirtualDub i was hoping someone might be able to help me.

I am trying to open a d2v-vfapi.avi
in Virtual dub and everytime i do it gives me an error reading

“Couldn’t locate decompressor for format 'vifp' (unknown)

Virtualdub required a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable."

Now my obvious solution is to find a codec that it needs, but i can’t seem to do that.
can anyone please help me.

I was capturing some .asf files using ASFTools and converting them to .avi [WMV3] but found I could not edit them using Virtual Dub or Adobe Premiere.

I used Stoik Video Converter Pro to rip them to MPEG4, which is what I wanted to do in the first place so I can edit them.

It’s been a handy tool for the odd file that Virtual Dub cannot handle.

Of course that should read:

Kel!

I had the same problem as you!
I got the same eroors when I tried to open up my avi files in Virtualdub and virtualdubMOD.

Then I downloaded this file, a nimo codec and installed it.. When I opened virtualdub again, I got some warning about DIVX “illegal” codecs were installed.. but hey it all worked fine smiley
I then followed a guide from videohelp about connect the two avifiles.. took me 5 mins. GL smiley

thanks for the link... how i wish they make a video format standard so we dont encounter such problems anymore... its tiring to convert something to another format just because your dvd player doesnt support it... =)

I use VirtualDubMod to hardsub and split videos and then I upload them to youtube. I really want to upload the rest of the drama that I’m currently uploading, Sweet Spy. But VirtualDubMod keeps on showing that warning issue. Csn you PLEASE help me?

I am having a similar problem to alex’s only with xvid extension instead of the wmv3 format.
Any help where i can get the right codec so that virtualdub can deal with the xvid format?

I have the same problem as alex except this is for .avi’s. The message says:
"“Couldn’t locate decompressor for format `XVID` (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a videro for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
Could anyone provide any help ther please?
I’ve tried everything and, reading this forum, installed the codecs as indicated in steps 8 and 9 and I think that may cause a problem.
Please help!
