The Lip Guest | @ Marcus Aurelius: Thank you very very much! I’d been looking for an answer to this problem for a whole day, and finally came across your answer... why can’t the guys at DivX (or Microsoft for that matter) just make their stuff compatible??
Anyways... thanks again. Videolan works like a charm!

codeSlayer05 Guest | I have read all your previous posts on advice to fix this problem. Many of your suggestions will help in most situations, but not all. Here is the BE-ALL-END-ALL solution to both the “Tag 85” problem and the “FOURCC XVID” error messages:
1) Uninstall ALL codec packs installed on your computer. This does not include the ones that come with Roxio or Adobe programs. This part is very CRUCIAL!!! It may not be as easy as it sounds. Have you ever uninstalled a codec and tried to reinstall it just to get a message that says something like “cannot overwrite file [ignore][abort][retry]”? If you get this message, the likely reason is that the codec DID NOT FULLY UNINSTALL!!! To remedy this you must do the following:
a) Using Add/Remove Programs or Start/Programs menu, uninstall all codec packs and divx players installed. Restart PC.
b) Search Program Files directory for any leftover Codec program folders. Delete folders and their contents if found. This is crucial to making a clean slate to reinstall codecs.
c) Clean refereneces to codecs & divx player from start menu (do All Users, then do each individual user profile).
2) Once you have successfully removed the codecs from your computer, install the Gordian Knot codec. A few years back, searching these forums would result in advise of “never install codec packs ... they are hacks of the original codec ... behave unexpectedly, etc...". While this advice was and is still valid, Gordian Knot is different. If you are looking for a reliable, all-in-one codec pack Gordian Knot is the one to get. It includes divx, xvid, divx player, and most other codecs one would want.
Other codec packs include K-lite which is almost universally recommended against.
If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself!
Here is the URL:
http://www.free-codecs.com/Gordian_Knot_Codec_Pack_download.htm
This is the file name of the most recent version:
Gordian.Knot.Codec.Pack.1.9.Setup.exe
Good luck and let me know if this works for you!

codeSlayer05 Guest | I forgot to mention in the last post another very important point: When installing Gordian Knot (G-Knot) you must let the default options install; do not change any of the settings. Also, always choose “YES” to overwrite newer files!
