mp4 file extension

I’ve just downloaded a movie with a mp4 extension that doesn’t work in any of my players that i have in my com, from divx to bs player. So heart broken and tired, I ask for help from anybody, that means you, to give advice.

There’s several ways to play mp4 files in Windows.
1. Play the file with QuickTime Player if you have it.
2. Install the mpegable DirectShow decoder from here: http://www.mpegable.com/show/download.html
3. Install 3ivx from here: http://www.3ivx.com (the only slight downside to 3ivx is the audio is limited to a 30-day trial. past that you won’t get audio when trying to play mp4 files, and on occasions a popup telling you the trial is over)

Thanks to person above but now it seems that after all the above mentioned method, I can hear the audio but can’t play the video. When I try the quicktime player, it says error-8971. I suppose the com’s gone crazy? Please do help. Thanks...

Apple’s developer site calls this the codecExtensionNotFoundErr (Codec extension not found error).
After pondering this a little, I did a test. I took a QuickTime file (extension .mov) and renamed it to .mp4 and tried to play it in QuickTime. I also got error -8971.
Based on that, you could try renaming your file extension to .mov to see if it works (slim chance, but worth the try). Make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime (6.5.2).

Thank you. I appreciate your help and effort, one last favour though; I’m not very knowledgable in renaming files. Is it possible that you teach me the whole renaming process?

Open 'my computer'. Go to tools, folder options. uncheck the box 'hide file extensions for known file types'. then click ok and close 'my computer'. locate your file, right click it, choose rename and type in .mov where the .mp4 is. if it was stuff.mp4, it should now be stuff.mov

hi, just suggest a quick and easy solution, download videolan player (google it, it is free and no junk spyware) ... this player can render anything you throw at it, I used it for an mp4 file just a day ago, no prob!

Go to http://codecs.necromancers.ru/ and download http://codecs.necromancers.ru/download/XviD-1.0.2-29082004.exe. Run it and there you are.
You will be able to view mp4 videos in Real one player and windows media player without rebooting.

effectively VLC (starting V0.8) plays directly .mp4 files without any codecs.
the .mp4 file can be played on Mac computer without this error. Maybe QuickTime for PC is not compatible... ?

The answer to every problem everywhere in the video file extension world is VLC media player.. It plays anything.. the problem I have is converting an mp4 to enable it to be burned to DVD, or perhaps it is a problem with the specific mp4 I am trying to convert.. nothing, even those that claim to be able to do it. AVS video converter (excellent program), Digital Media converter 2.5 (good), DivX converter (excellent), and Super DVD Creator (handles most stuff.. and burns it to disc too!!) cannot recognise the file, its type.. etc.. VLC (thank heavens for excellent software) will play it but everything asks for missing codec RenderFile (wfile).. of which I am cofuzzled to confuzzledom about.. any help would be appreciated.

Actually, videolan is cool and plays almost anything, but with my recent experience (today) I got an mp4 file to play only in the latest Quicktime player for Windows. Otherwise, VL played the video, but not the audio. Just an FYI!

I’ve got a mp4 that doesnt play nowhere... when I check the info on VLC it says that is mp4a. I can hear the sound but no image whatsoever... I tried all y’alls hints above to no luck. Trying almost all players, renaming to mov. I’ve found a website that suposely had the codec but is freakishly expensive to buy for just a movie... and they dont have a “trial” version. I really ran out of options aside from downloading the movie again in another format... Any hints will be appreciated
